Emirates Biotech introduces Embio PLA biopolymer products

Emirates Biotech has launched a new product range called Embio, a line of polylactic acid (PLA) biopolymers produced in the UAE.

According to the company, customers in the region will be able to access locally stocked PLA, which it stated could reduce delivery times and allow for smaller minimum order quantities. The material is aimed at converters, brand owners and packaging manufacturers working with plant-based materials.

Marc Verbruggen, chief executive of Emirates Biotech, said: “Our launch of Embio products marks a major milestone in our journey to make renewable and compostable plastics accessible across the Middle East.”

The Embio portfolio covers PLA grades for rigid and flexible packaging, coated paperboard, fibres, nonwovens and 3D printing.

Prashant Lohade, sales development manager at Emirates Biotech, said: “Our decision to maintain local inventory was driven by the need for greater flexibility and faster response times for our customers. With Embio grades now available in the UAE, customers can access PLA in smaller volumes and benefit from shorter lead times.

‘Important milestone’

“This marks an important milestone for companies in the Middle East looking to integrate sustainable materials into their existing production lines.”

Emirates Biotech claimed that its PLA combines clarity, strength and processability, and reported that it has a lower carbon footprint than conventional plastics. The material can be recycled or industrially composted and does not form persistent microplastics, it added.

An Emirates Biotech technical support team will work with customers on processing trials and application development.

Christophe Enkiri, product manager at Emirates Biotech, said: “Each Embio grade has been carefully developed and tested under strict conditions to ensure verified compliance with food-contact, bio-based, and compostability standards. This proves that performance and sustainability can coexist without sacrificing a material’s functionality.”
Emirates Biotech said the launch aligns with the UAE’s sustainability goals, including its national Net Zero 2050 Strategy and efforts to develop a circular economy.
