Niagara Bottling to close Michigan plant, affecting 86 workers

Niagara Bottling is to close a facility in Plymouth, Michigan, by the end of October, affecting 86 workers.

A Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) filing with the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity says the facility, previously owned by Absopure, will close by 31 October 2026 as part of a company reorganisation.

Niagara acquired Absopure’s retail bottled water business in June 2026. At the time, it said the acquisition would be accompanied by several hundred million dollars of additional investment in manufacturing infrastructure across the Midwest, Northeast, West Coast and Southwest.

‘Commitment to the US market’

‘Our commitment to the US market and our customers remains unchanged,’ Niagara said in a statement following the acquisition. ‘As a family business with 9,000-plus team members across 50-plus plant locations, we are now able to further build on our network to serve our customers nationwide.’

The company had also said the investment would support the modernisation of its manufacturing network, with new technology intended to reduce energy use, packaging material use and freight emissions.

In May, Niagara announced the acquisition of a 305,000 sq ft recycling and packaging facility in Vernon, Los Angeles County, California. The facility had previously been operated by RPlanet Earth, which closed the site in September 2025.

RPlanet Earth

Niagara acquired the facility from RPlanet Earth Los Angeles Holdings and RPlanet Earth Los Angeles, along with the RPlanet Earth brand.

Founded in 1963 and headquartered in Diamond Bar, California, Niagara Bottling operates more than 50 plants and employs more than 9,000 people across the US, Mexico, Australia and the UK.

The company produces bottled water, sparkling water, teas, sports drinks, coffee, protein drinks and non-dairy milk products.
