BW Converting is targeting the pet food packaging market with its Hudson-Sharp Pour & Lok technology, which adds a resealable pouring feature to flexible packaging produced from rollstock.
The format creates a gusseted opening that unfolds to provide a controlled pouring feature. It can then be reclosed using hook-to-hook style closures.
BW Converting said the technology is designed to work with existing vertical form-fill-seal equipment. This means converters can produce the format without major changes to filling equipment, seal bars or established production processes.
The company said the format is suited to pet food applications where controlled dispensing and resealability are required.
Added functionality
“Pour & Lok gives converters a practical way to bring added functionality to pet food packaging without creating unnecessary complexity for their customers’ filling operations,” said Péter Sztehnó, sales director for EMEA in bag converting and printing at BW Converting.
The technology could provide converters with access to pet food packaging applications while maintaining established filling processes, he added.
It is designed for roll-to-roll production, with seal integrity and perforation quality important to the manufacturing process, and could also be used for other pourable products.
Potential applications listed by the company include cereals, snacks, nuts, seeds, selected frozen foods and lawn and garden products.
The development follows the launch of a resealable spaghetti packaging format by Italian packaging machinery supplier Altopack. Its format uses a transverse resealable zip and is designed to allow consumers to open and reclose the pack after use.
