Rigid food packaging market set to soar

The global rigid food packaging market is expected to hit $230.7 billion by 2035, driven by consumer demand and sustainability, according to the latest Future Market Insights (FMI) report.

In 2024, sales figures stood at $145.2 billion, a figure that is projected to grow to $150.3bn by 2025.

Plastics rigid food packaging is expected to dominate, accounting for 53.4 per cent of the market share by 2035.

Trays and containers are projected to be the leading packaging type, holding a 42.7 per cent market share by 2035, the findings showed. Forecasters said the growth in the market was being driven by shifting consumer preferences, advancements in packaging technology, and a growing emphasis on sustainability.

The rising appetite for processed and convenience foods was cited as one of the primary reasons behind the demand for innovative materials that ensure product safety, long shelf-life, and ease of transport.

Tamper-evident designs were becoming the industry standard, owing to stricter food laws and growing customer awareness, the report found.

The push for sustainable and eco-friendly materials was cited as a trend that would continue to shape the future.

Manufacturers were adopting eco-friendly rigid packaging as biodegradable, recyclable, and reusable rigid food packaging options become more popular among consumers and companies.

Innovations in materials and design, including improved barrier properties, lightweight solutions, and enhanced durability were also driving growth in the market, with such advancements helping to extend shelf-life, maintain food quality, and reduce food waste.

The findings also showed that consumers were seeking visually appealing designs in premium finishes.

Meanwhile, stringent regulations surrounding food safety, hygiene and quality were leading to the adoption of rigid packaging that offered better protection from contamination and external factors, the report said.

“The rigid food packaging market is evolving with growing demand for sustainability, durability, and convenience,” said Ismail Sutaria, lead consultant in packaging at FMI. “Innovations in recyclable materials and smart packaging are shaping the future.”

Despite the positive growth trajectory, the report found the market faces hurdles from fluctuating raw material prices due to global trade policies, crude oil costs and environmental laws.

In addition, supply chain interruptions caused by logistical constraints and transportation bottlenecks could affect production and distribution, resulting in periodic market slowdowns.

Companies were reducing these risks by diversifying their sourcing strategy, investing in local production facilities, and implementing automation, the report added.
