SunDance has expanded its Pouch³ flexible packaging format into the cereal category, positioning the pack as an alternative to the established bag-in-box format.
The company describes Pouch³ as a patented cuboid flexible pack designed to combine the shelf presence of a box with changes to material use, graphics and logistics.
Unlike conventional stand-up pouches, Pouch³ retains a box-style shape and provides six printable sides. SunDance said these surfaces can accommodate product information, recipes, sustainability statements, seasonal designs and other on-pack content.
Shorter production runs
SunDance offers digital printing for the format, which is said can support shorter production runs for holiday packs, limited-time offers, market trials, regional activity, retailer-specific editions and seasonal varieties.
The pack is also designed to reduce headspace and make fuller use of available volume, with potential benefits for case packing, pallet loading, warehouse storage and transport density. Pouch³ uses a single-film structure.
According to SunDance, the format uses 30 per cent to 40 per cent less material than standard stand-up pouches. It can also be produced using recyclable and post-consumer recycled film structures, depending on product and performance requirements.
‘Presence and innovation’
Kandi Johansmeyer, sales and marketing senior vice-president of SunDance, said: “Cereal brands should not have to choose between strong shelf presence and packaging innovation.
“Pouch³ preserves the familiar, space-efficient shape consumers and retailers recognise while giving manufacturers a flexible package designed for modern production, distribution and marketing needs.
“The cereal aisle is an ideal setting for this technology. Pouch³ gives brands a differentiated package with premium graphics and strong shelf impact while helping them use space and materials more efficiently. It is an opportunity to modernise one of the grocery aisle’s most recognisable formats.”
