Indorama Ventures and Rebhan have developed a PET bottle for the beauty and personal care market that is designed to combine a glass-like appearance with the properties of PET.
The companies have introduced Luxyclear EBM PET 5508, a PET grade for extrusion blow moulding. It is designed for producing thick-walled cosmetics bottles with high clarity and transparency.
The resulting bottles are intended to provide a glass-like appearance while retaining PET’s lightweight, durability and shatter-resistant properties.
Different grades
According to Indorama Ventures, the material is available as a conventional virgin PET grade and in versions containing up to 100 per cent chemically recycled content or mass balanced certified renewable feedstock.
The different feedstock options are intended to provide alternatives to virgin fossil resources.
The bottles are now commercially available to beauty and personal care brands across Europe, the Americas and Asia.
Dr Patrick Amrhein, business director of Specialty Polymers at Indorama Ventures, said: “In the beauty and personal care sectors, brands are increasingly turning to our glass-like bottles because they combine the elegant look of glass with the functional advantages of PET.
‘Luxurious transparency’
“Our solutions offer luxurious transparency, brilliant clarity and modern designs that immediately grab attention at the point of sale, while also being cost-effective, lightweight and perfectly suited for everyday use.”
The development follows Indorama Ventures’ recent work to expand PET recycling. Last month, the company announced a partnership with Suntory Holdings, Suntory PepsiCo Beverage (Thailand) and Iwatani to introduce Flake-to-Preform direct recycling technology in Thailand.
The project is expected to produce rPET preforms equivalent to around 400 million PET bottles annually from 2028.
