UFLex opens $52m woven PP bag production site in Mexico

Indian flexible packaging giant UFlex has commissioned its first overseas woven PP bags manufacturing plant in Mexico.

Located in Altamira, the $52 million facility is spread across 10 acres and has an annual production capacity of 80 million woven PP bags.

The bags are said to be engineered for greater strength and incorporate laser venting technology to prevent mites, as well as hot-air sealing technology adaptable to different bag sizes and specifications for durability and product safety.

The site commissioning marked a ‘major milestone’ in the company’s global expansion strategy and significantly strengthens its presence in the Americas, according to UFlex, which is headquartered in Noida.

Pet ownership is steadily rising across North and South America, driving increased demand for premium pet food and high-performance packaging, said Jeevaraj Gopal Pillai, president of flexible packaging and new product development.

The North American pet food packaging market, valued at over $12 billion in 2026 by Grand View Research, is projected to experience sustained growth.

‘High-potential market’

“Latin America continues to emerge as a high-potential market driven by urbanisation, rising disposable incomes, and growing awareness of pet nutrition,” Gopal Pillai said.

“This growth trajectory is driving demand for durable, hygienic, and sustainable woven PP bag formats that can withstand the challenges of transportation and storage while preserving product freshness.”

The plant reportedly features an in-house recycling unit, a zero solid waste discharge facility, and has been equipped with advanced European machinery.

It houses an integrated converting facility incorporating sustainable water-based inks, and operates at speeds of up to 300m per minute.

It also includes an integrated quality and environmental control laboratory to ensure consistent product quality and environmental compliance, UFlex said.

In addition, the company says the facility produces high-quality PP fabric for the manufacture of the woven PP bags.

‘Shorter turnaround times’

“The new facility will enable us to deliver innovative, high-quality packaging closer to our customers, ensure shorter turnaround times, and support the evolving sustainability and performance needs of the region’s fast-growing pet food industry,” said Gopal Pillai.
