Coperion expands Swiss test centre

Feeding and conveying specialist Coperion K-Tron is to expand its test centre in Niederlenz, Switzerland.

The proposed development is aimed at improving the company’s capabilities in testing materials, with a particular focus on eco-plastics for packaging.

The expansion will introduce cutting-edge containment systems to handle materials safely, including an airlock system with advanced filtration according to Marco Hadrys, test centre manager. The upgrade is crucial for industries requiring stringent environmental and safety standards, including food processing and chemicals, he said.

The expansion will allow Coperion to “push the boundaries” in testing eco-friendly materials, Hadrys explained, adding that it will “provide our clients with solutions that are both efficient and sustainable”.

The test centre will continue to facilitate customer trials and R&D, annually testing an estimated 150 different materials, from bulk plastics to finished food products. This move supports the company’s commitment to innovation, Hadrys said, especially in the transition towards more sustainable packaging.

The project is expected to be completed by April.

Michael Reinhard, general manager at Coperion K-Tron (Switzerland) said: “This investment not only solidifies our market position but also aligns with the global push towards sustainability in packaging.”

In 2022, the company began the construction of a recycling test laboratory at its German production facility in Niederbiegen. This launched in November 2023, testing every recycling step from materials handling and feeding to extrusion, compounding, pelletising, material post-processing and deodorisation.
