Japan-based Toppan and its Italian film manufacturing subsidiary, Irplast, have announced the inauguration of a new manufacturing line for high-performance BOPP films.
The new line will create an overall supply capacity of up to 30,000 tonnes per year of high-performance BOPP films and is expected to begin full commercial operations by late 2026.
Toppan Group said it is accelerating the establishment of its global supply network for recycle-ready mono-material packaging to meet tightening environmental regulations – such as the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) – in its packaging business.
High-end packaging
Features of the new BOPP manufacturing line reportedly include uniform physical properties and high dimensional stability achieved through the LIS1M1 simultaneous stretching process.
This robustness will enable Toppan and Irplast to develop high-end packaging applications that require durability even under demanding conditions such as retort sterilisation, Toppan said.
The film’s strength will also help focus development on reducing film thickness, enabling a steady, continuous reduction in plastic consumption while maintaining essential packaging functions.
Established in Tokyo in 1900, the Toppan Group provides sustainable, integrated solutions in fields including printing, communications, security, packaging, décor materials, electronics, and digital transformation. It has a global team of more than 50,000 employees.
In March 2025, Toppan Group entered a definitive agreement to acquire 80 per cent of the share capital of Irplast.
