Printpack, a US-based producer of flexible and specialty rigid packaging, has announced it will close its plant in Elgin, Illinois, with more than 100 jobs set to go from early January 2026.
Documents filed with the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity show that layoffs are scheduled to begin on 5 January, with the site expected to shut fully by 30 April 2026. The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN) notice lists 111 affected employees.
The Elgin plant is not unionised, and the company told state officials that employees do not have bumping rights. The WARN filing states that Printpack will provide severance pay and support for workers who may be able to transfer to other company sites.
“All employees at the Elgin facility who do not transfer to another location will be offered severance pay in addition to their final wages,” the letter said.
Impacted roles
A plant-wide announcement was made on 5 November, followed by written notices to staff. Roles affected include press operators, slitter operators, quality assurance technicians, laminator assistants and plant managers.
The facility opened in 1965 under Standard Packaging Corporation as part of a vertically integrated operation producing a range of packaging products. Printpack acquired the site in 1978 during an expansion led by founder J. Erskine Love Junior.
Founded in 1956, Printpack is privately held and headquartered in Atlanta. The company operates 19 manufacturing plants in the US and Mexico, and employs more than 3,200 people.
The company supplies packaging for food, non food and health care applications, with capabilities that include flexographic and rotogravure printing, extrusion and lamination. It also runs sustainability programmes that include the use of post consumer recycled materials.
