QR code shift drives smart packaging push, says Domino Printing Sciences

Packaging is increasingly becoming a connected layer between products and digital information.

In an exclusive interview with Eco-plastics in Packaging at Interpack in Düsseldorf, Craig Stobie, director of global sector development at Domino Printing Sciences, discusses the rapid shift towards QR-based packaging and how digital printing is enabling late-stage customisation.

He highlights accelerating adoption of QR codes, driven in part by retailers such as Tesco, with reported benefits including reduced waste and improved supply chain efficiency.

Stobie also points to sustainability applications already emerging, including label-free packaging enabled by QR codes in markets such as South Korea, where legislation is reshaping how products are identified and tracked.

The discussion also covers regulatory pressures from EU frameworks, digital product passports and emerging deposit return schemes, all of which are increasing demand for more advanced traceability and identification systems.

Watch the full interview to hear his insights on digital printing, QR adoption and the future of smart packaging.
