DePoly opens PET recycling showcase plant

DePoly has opened a showcase plant in Monthey, Switzerland, to demonstrate its PET recycling technology as it moves towards commercialisation.

The company’s process breaks down PET waste into its original chemical components before recreating virgin quality raw materials with no loss of performance. The materials are intended to be suitable for all PET applications.

Described as the first depolymerisation facility of its kind and scale in Switzerland, the plant was officially inaugurated on 6 and 7 July. The event was attended by several of the company’s investors, including Una Terra Venture Capital, Infinity, BASF and Beiersdorf.

The opening follows DePoly’s 2025 announcement that it would build the Monthey facility after securing $23 million in seed funding to support its expansion. The company said at the time that the plant would process around 500 tonnes of PET and polyester feedstock per year before supporting the development of its first commercial facility.

‘Industrial scale’

The showcase plant is expected to create 12 direct jobs and more than 30 indirect jobs.

The facility will allow the company to demonstrate its technology at industrial scale, qualify its products with customers and collect operational data to support the development of future commercial plants.

The site will also be used to optimise the recycling process and qualify raw materials with industrial customers.

“Innovation is often celebrated in the lab, but impact happens when the technology enters the industrial world,” said Samantha Anderson, chief executive and co-founder of DePoly. “This showcase plant represents that transition for DePoly.”

The company added that knowledge gained from the Monthey facility will support the development of its first commercial plant, which is expected to have a capacity of 50,000t per year. The location of the facility is expected to be announced during the first half of 2027.
