Pactiv LLC is to close its thermoforming facility in Bakersfield, California, resulting in the loss of 127 jobs.
The closure is scheduled for 14 October 2025, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) notice filed with the state in mid-August.
Under the WARN Act, employers must provide at least 60 days’ notice before carrying out mass layoffs, plant closures or relocations. Notices must be issued to affected staff as well as state and local authorities.
Pactiv is a major North American manufacturer of fresh food and beverage packaging. The company employs more than 14,000 people across more than 50 manufacturing sites and 42 distribution centres.
Corporate changes
The closure follows a change of ownership for Pactiv’s parent company Pactiv Evergreen. In late 2024, Novolex, a foodservice packaging producer owned by Apollo Global Management, acquired Pactiv Evergreen in a deal valued at $6.7 billion. Pactiv LLC operates as a subsidiary of Pactiv Evergreen.
The acquisition, completed in April, created one of the largest food packaging companies with manufacturing and distribution operations in the US, Canada, Mexico and Europe. The combined business now manages 250 brands and 39,000 stock keeping units.
Pactiv Evergreen was established in 2020 following the merger of Evergreen Packaging and Pactiv, both previously acquired by Reynolds Group Holdings. The company became publicly traded at that time.
In 2022, Apollo Funds purchased a majority stake in Novolex from Carlyle, which retained a minority interest.
