The global thermoforming films market is forecast to reach $24.8 billion by 2034, according to new research.
Surging demand for convenient and packaged food products worldwide, the expanding healthcare and pharmaceutical industry, and a focus on sustainable packaging are all driving demand for ‘flexible and efficient’ packaging solutions, a report by market intelligence firm Growth Market Reports suggested.
It revealed the global thermoforming films market stood at $14.1 billion in 2025 and has a projected 6.5 per cent compound annual growth rate from 2026 to 2034.
The primary growth factor underpinning the expansion was an ‘escalating need for cost-effective, lightweight, and sustainable packaging materials that align with evolving regulatory and consumer preferences worldwide’.
The study found that changing consumer lifestyles, urbanisation, and the increasing preference for ready-to-eat meals are significantly boosting the appetite for high-performance packaging that extends shelf-life and maintains product freshness.
Tamper-evident packaging
Meanwhile, the increasing production of medical devices, surgical instruments, diagnostic kits, and pharmaceutical products is fuelling substantial interest in sterile, tamper-evident packaging materials, the findings showed.
Sustainable packaging and a move by manufacturers to invest in recyclable, mono-material, and bio-based thermoforming films to comply with evolving environmental regulations and meet consumer demand for eco-friendly packaging, were also fuelling demand.
In addition, digital manufacturing technologies and automation were improving production efficiency, enabling manufacturers to cater to growing market needs while maintaining consistent product quality.
The research suggested that innovation would remain ‘central to market growth’, with manufacturers focused on recyclable materials, improved barrier performance, and lightweight packaging designs.
The combination of sustainability initiatives, technological progress, and expanding industrial applications is likely to ‘support stable market growth through 2034, creating new opportunities for manufacturers and packaging solution providers worldwide’, the report said.
Regulatory challenges
However, the research also cautioned that the thermoforming films market could face several challenges that might influence its growth trajectory over the forecast period.
Regulatory pressure on the use of conventional plastics was cited as a primary concern.
In response to governments implementing stricter environmental regulations to reduce plastics waste, manufacturers were feeling compelled to invest in sustainable alternatives that often involve higher production costs and complex manufacturing processes.
The volatility in raw material prices was also flagged as a key challenge. Fluctuations in crude oil prices and supply chain disruptions directly impacted raw material costs, reduced profit margins, and created price uncertainties for manufacturers, the research added.
According to the latest Flexible Packaging Europe Raw Material Price Index, flexible packaging raw material prices increased significantly during Q2 2026, with geopolitical tensions, supply disruption and higher energy costs driving sharp rises across key materials.
The index showed that quarterly minimum prices increased across all substrates monitored compared with the previous quarter, with the largest increase recorded for BOPP film (20 micron), where prices almost doubled, rising by 97 per cent compared with Q1 2026.
