UK standards body seeks technical experts

The British Standards Institution (BSI) is on the hunt for new members to support the development of machinery standards in the polymer industry.

The BSI committee MCE/3/2 – which helps develop and influence CEN/ISO machinery-related standards in the UK, Europe and further afraid – is seeking people with technical knowledge across a range of plastics processing fields.

The committee covers injection, blow and extrusion moulding, ancillary equipment (including mould clamping systems), thermoforming, and cutting equipment.

“CEN/CENELEC and ISO standards are a vital part of keeping people safe in the workplace, ensuring that machinery and equipment are designed and constructed to be safe to use,” said Nigel Flowers, managing director of Sumitomo (SHI) Demag Plastics Machinery UK and president of the British Plastics Federation.

Flowers, who is involved in developing technical safety standards for plastics production equipment through his representation on the BSI committees, added: “With our new relationship with Europe, it is now more than ever that we need to have a say in the development of safety standards – as while they are developed by the EU, they will be adopted by the UK often without modification, and we have to accept the requirements.”

The committee meets twice a year virtually, and there is the opportunity to be invited as a guest to see the work it does before joining.

Those with technical knowledge in any of the above areas and, who would like to become involved, can contact csc@bsigroup.com.
