ExxonMobil partners with Bandera to create MDO-free PE substrate films

A fully PE pet food pouch designed for recyclability has been developed by ExxonMobil Signature Polymers and extrusion line manufacturer Bandera.

The pouch uses a stiff PE film that acts as a replacement for PET, without machine direction orientation (MDO) for a mono-material solution, ExxonMobil said.

The substrate film is claimed to provide stiffness and optics while meeting converting requirements for printing and lamination.

It was made on a conventional Bandera blown film extrusion line, resulting in ‘good optical properties, high stiffness and dimensional stability at elevated temperatures’.

The sealant film for the pouch, an ethylene vinyl alcohol-containing film, was made on a Bandera Barrier Flex extrusion line using an ExxonMobil Signature Polymers’ Exxtra Seal enhanced polymer, enabling a broad sealing window.

“Extrusion technology has come a long way”, said Diego Castiglioni, technical director of Bandera, which designs and manufactures extrusion lines for packaging and converting industries worldwide.

“Our technology contributes to extreme flexibility and outstanding technical properties.”

At Interpack in May, ExxonMobil explained to Eco-plastics in Packaging that the company is focused on material innovation, collaboration and circular design to support the transition towards more sustainable packaging systems without compromising performance or cost viability.
