India-based ACG Packaging Materials has had its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions targets officially validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).
The business, which supplies films and foils to the pharmaceutical and nutraceutical industries, has committed to reducing absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 90 per cent.
It has also pledged to lower Scope 3 emissions from purchased goods and services, fuel and energy-related activities, and upstream transportation and distribution by 97 per cent per tonne of products produced.
The SBTi, a collaboration between the Carbon Disclosure Project, the UN Global Compact, the World Resources Institute, and the World Wide Fund for Nature, provides a globally recognised framework for companies to set GHG reduction targets aligned with climate science.
It specifies how much and how quickly emissions must be reduced to limit global warming to well below 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.
Carbon conscious
According to Mumbai-headquartered ACG, the validation blends with its core philosophy of ‘Making it Better’ and solidifies its commitment to a business model that ‘thrives in a carbon-conscious future’.
“We’re not simply aiming for incremental improvements; we’re undertaking a fundamental shift in how we operate,” said ACG chief executive Sr Shivshankar.
“Our ambitious interim targets – reducing absolute Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 54.6 per cent and Scope 3 emissions by 61.07 per cent per tonne of products by full-year 2033 – demonstrate our dedication to tangible progress. This commitment enhances our ability to attract sustainability-focused investors, fortifies our supply chain, and establishes ACG as a leader in responsible manufacturing.”
Karan Singh, ACG’s managing director, said the future of the pharmaceutical and nutraceutical industries depends on responsible innovation and sustainable operations.
“This validation provides us with a clear, science-backed framework to drive meaningful progress in reducing our environmental impact,” he said.
“As we move forward, our focus will be on integrating sustainable practices across our operations, investing in advanced technologies, and collaborating with stakeholders to build a resilient, low-carbon future. This milestone is a testament to our dedication to making it better while ensuring that our industry remains aligned with global climate goals.”
