SBTi validates Coveris emissions targets

Coveris has had its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions targets officially validated by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi).

The European packaging manufacturer has committed to reducing absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 54.6 per cent by 2033, from a 2023 base year.

The business, which specialises in flexible plastics and paper packaging, has also pledged to reduce absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions (from suppliers rather than direct emissions) by 32.5 per cent within the same timeframe.

Coveris has a corporate office in Vienna and operates 17 sites across the EMEA region, employing 2,500 people.

Fiene Száki says the validation reinforces Coveris’s responsibility to act now across all scopes

The converter said it would implement a group-wide transition plan to support the targets, which would involve outlining steps to reduce emissions at every level – from operational efficiency and renewable energy sourcing to value chain collaboration and product innovation.

‘Responsibility to act now’

“This validation reinforces our responsibility to act now across all scopes,” said Fiene Száki, group sustainability director of Coveris.

“It highlights the importance of data-led decisions in building a circular future for packaging. Our No Waste vision goes hand in hand with measurable climate action.”

Coveris claims to be committed to innovation and sustainability, developing ‘attractive and environmentally responsible’ packaging in line with its No Waste vision.

The company established ReCover, a dedicated division focused on waste procurement, processing, recycling technologies and supply chain partnerships to advance the circular economy for plastics, in December 2022.

The news comes weeks after Coveris announced it had invested €1.8 million ($1.17m) in its manufacturing operations in Poland, as the flexible packaging producer looks to expand capacity and improve production efficiency in central and eastern Europe.
