Food and beverage closures manufacturer Silgan Closures has announced a goal to offset 75 per cent of its electricity consumption with clean energy credits within the next five years.
Current legislation in Illinois requires all electricity in the state to come from renewable sources and nuclear power by 2050.
Silgan confirmed it is joining statewide efforts to expand energy reliability and sustainability by investing in community wind and solar projects, and it revealed plans to reduce energy use at two manufacturing facilities in Illinois.
This would be achieved by partnering with renewable energy developers to contractually support wind and solar electricity generation projects.
The company added that it is taking steps to increase energy efficiency at its facilities in Illinois through its partnership with the US Department of Energy’s (DOE) Better Plants Program, which requires manufacturers to reduce energy intensity throughout all of their US-based operations by 25 per cent over 10 years and report on their progress to the DOE.
Century-old Illinois roots
“At Silgan Closures, our roots go back nearly a century to a family-owned Illinois business,” said Silgan Closures president Liz Wiese.
“Today, as a global leader in food and beverage closure manufacturing, we remain deeply embedded in the communities we serve.
“Our latest investments in cleaner energy here in Illinois reflect that commitment – not only to our customers, but to driving sustainable economic growth where our employees live, work, and rely on our products in their homes.”
Silgan Closures is the food and beverage closures division of Silgan Holdings.
Its US headquarters and innovation centre are located in Downers Grove, Illinois, while its European headquarters is in Munich, Germany.
