Nefab opens Michigan returnable packaging hub

Injection moulder Nefab has expanded its manufacturing footprint in North America with the opening of a new returnable packaging and engineering campus in Wixom, Michigan.

The facility, operated by PolyFlex, part of the Nefab Group, will serve the automotive and advanced manufacturing sectors with returnable plastics packaging and protective shipping materials.

Brian Finkel, director of operations at PolyFlex, said: “Having design, tooling and injection moulding all on one campus means we can offer genuinely end-to-end service.

“With press capacities up to 2,600 tonnes, we have the range to handle precision components and large-format systems while keeping quality high and lead-times short.”

Returnable plastics packaging

The campus covers approximately 137,600 sq ft across two buildings. One facility is dedicated to injection moulding for returnable plastics packaging, while the second produces engineered protective shipping materials used to cushion, separate and protect products during transport.

According to the company, the site brings together design, tooling, injection moulding and engineered packaging production at a single location.

Injection moulding equipment at the facility ranges from 125t to 2,600t presses, allowing production of components ranging from smaller precision parts to large-format packaging and materials handling systems.

Nefab said the investment is intended to support reusable packaging systems that can improve transport efficiency and reduce dependence on single-use packaging. The company also stated that local manufacturing capacity will help strengthen supply chain resilience and reduce packaging waste for customers across the region.

‘Scale reusable packaging solutions’

Darrell Tiedeman, vice-president of plastics solutions Americas at Nefab, said: “The expanded operation strengthens our ability to scale reusable packaging solutions across North America.

“As manufacturers move away from single-use packaging, increasing local production of returnable systems is key to improving both efficiency and sustainability across the supply chain.”Located within one of Michigan’s manufacturing corridors, the new campus forms part of Nefab’s wider strategy to increase regional manufacturing capacity in North America.
