Global rHDPE market poised to reach $38.7 billion by 2033

The global rHDPE market is projected to surge to $38.7 billion over the next seven years, new research has revealed.

This is up from $20.6 billion in 2026, registering a compound annual growth rate of 9.4 per cent during the forecast period, the Persistence Market Research analysis found.

Growth was being fuelled by sustainability initiatives, circular economy regulations, and the increasing adoption of recycled plastics across multiple industries, according to the report.

Rapidly becoming a preferred raw material for manufacturers seeking to reduce dependence on virgin plastics, rHDPE can meet evolving environmental regulations and corporate sustainability commitments, it said.

While non-food-grade rHDPE continues to dominate the market due to its broad industrial applications, food-grade rHDPE is emerging as one of the industry’s most attractive growth segments.

Advancements in near-infrared sorting, decontamination technologies, purification systems, and regulatory approvals were enabling manufacturers to produce recycled materials suitable for food-contact packaging, the research suggested.

Demand to ramp up

It predicted that demand for food-grade rHDPE is expected to accelerate significantly, as global consumer brand owners continue increasing recycled content across beverage containers, household products, and personal care packaging.

Innovation in recycling technologies was improving resin consistency, durability, and processing performance, allowing manufacturers to replace virgin plastics across an expanding range of applications while maintaining product quality and manufacturing efficiency, the report noted.

Circular economy regulations introduced by governments across North America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific were also creating long-term investment opportunities, the analysts discovered.

These include Extended Producer Responsibility programmes, mandatory recycled-content targets, and plastics waste reduction initiatives.

Asia-Pacific remained the largest regional market for rHDPE, supported by extensive manufacturing activity, expanding recycling infrastructure, and abundant post-consumer plastics waste.

Elsewhere, North America is projected to register the fastest growth throughout the forecast period.

Drivers of adoption

Increasing recycled-content mandates, corporate sustainability investments, and modernisation of recycling infrastructure are encouraging greater adoption of rHDPE across packaging and consumer goods industries.

In addition, strong demand from major brand owners is further supporting investment in advanced recycling technologies capable of producing premium-quality recycled resin.

Countries such as China and India were found to be continually investing in domestic recycling capabilities while strengthening regulatory frameworks that encourage sustainable plastics management and the utilisation of greater recycled content.

Meanwhile, Europe was reportedly demonstrating stable market expansion through comprehensive circular economy legislation, mature waste collection systems, ambitious packaging sustainability initiatives, and regulatory measures encouraging greater recycled plastics use.

Earlier this month, research by market intelligence firm Growth Market Reports found that the global thermoforming films market is forecast to reach $24.8 billion by 2034.

This was being driven by demand for convenient and packaged food products worldwide, the expanding healthcare and pharmaceutical industry, and a focus on sustainable packaging, requiring ‘flexible and efficient’ packaging solutions.
